Substance Abuse Prevention
Life Skills Training
Substance abuse prevention at DPS is anchored in the 'Life Skills Training' prevention curriculum.
The Life Skills Training (LST) program teaches prevention-oriented self-management skills to upper-elementary and middle school students.
LST has been rigorously evaluated, and its impact on substance use can be detected up to seven years later, in lower rates of use by LST graduates.
Life Skills is a Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence 'BluePrint Program', and has been endorsed by the federal department of education as well.
The program is implemented by numerous DPS Elementary and Middle Schools. Teachers receive a two-day training workshop, provided by DPS staff, which prepares them to teach Life Skills to their students.
- 320 DPS personnel trained and equipped to implement the program, as of September, 2002
- Implementation fidelity checks on 14 classrooms yielded fidelity scores of 60%
- Trainings are being conducted for both upper Elementary and Middle School levels
